Dental Hygienist
Q&As:
What happens at a hygiene appointment?
Our hygienist will talk you through the different oral hygiene products you can use to ensure you have good oral health, taking into account things such as manual dexterity/braces etc and finding what works best for you. They will then clean your teeth, removing calculus and staining and finishing with a polish.
How long does it take?
The appointment is 30 minutes. You may require more than one appointment and if so the hygienist will make you aware that you need to book another appointment.
Does it hurt?
The treatment shouldn't hurt, however there may be some discomfort if you are pregnant or have gum disease.
How often do I need to see a hygienist?
Generally patients see a hygienist 6 monthly or once a year, however it can be more in some cases, especially if you have gum disease or poor oral hygiene.
Will a hygienist cure my gum disease?
A hygienist can play a crucial role in treating and managing gum disease, but they do not cure it. The treatment of gum disease typically involves a collaborative effort between the dental hygienist and the patient, the techniques and products shown in the appointment should be applied at home also to prevent further progression of the gum disease.
My gums bleed when I brush, should I see a hygienist?
Yes, if your gums bleed when you brush, it's advisable to see a dental professional, and a dental hygienist is a good starting point. Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease (gingivitis), and it's important to address the issue promptly to prevent further complications such as tooth loss.
