Tooth Decay Treatment
Tooth decay can affect people of all ages and even very young children.
Tooth decay is caused by plaque, a sticky layer of germs, in your mouth. The germs in plaque turn the sugar in food and drinks into acid, which can gradually damage your teeth. The acid from plaque can then begin to attack the outer layer of your tooth, the enamel. Repeated acid attacks can wear the enamel layer away. If plaque is allowed to build up, it can lead to problems, such as dental caries (holes in the teeth), toothache, gum disease or dental abscesses.
Tooth decay may not show any visible symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. The symptoms of tooth decay include:
Tooth sensitivity
Bad breath
Brown, black or grey spots appearing on your teeth
An unpleasant taste in the mouth
Ignoring tooth decay and leaving it untreated can lead to further problems such as gum disease or cavities.
Treatments include routine dental check-ups, hygiene visits through to root canal treatments.

Your Tooth Decay Treatment Journey
1. Consultation
The first step on your treatment journey with Dental Smiles Takeley is consultation. It helps us to assess your mouth, allows us to look over your dental history, and ensures you can discuss your treatment in advance and answer any questions you might have.
2. Treatment
Tooth decay often begins with a white spot, usually near the gum line. At this phase, tooth decay may be reversible with assistance from your dentist. They will be able to give you guidance on brushing technique and fluoride toothpaste. If caught early enough, they may be able to apply a protective fluoride varnish to help stop further decay. It is much simpler and cheaper to treat tooth decay in its early stages.
For later stages of tooth decay, depending on how advanced the issue is you may require a filling. If the decay has travelled into the soft matter of your tooth, you may need root canal treatment. In severe cases where the tooth cannot be restored, it may need to be removed.
3. Aftercare
We are committed to dental excellence – our dentists are here to help if you have any issues after the treatment has finished and will schedule review appointments as required. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, we’ll provide detailed aftercare following your treatment, to ensure you feel happy and confident about your teeth.
